When Mediation Can Help

Family and Divorce

Mediation offers a private, structured alternative to court, giving you a voluntary and confidential way to reach durable agreements before, during, or after a divorce or separation. It's especially helpful when you want to:

  • Resolve conflict collaboratively while protecting children, finances, and future co-parenting relationships

  • Make informed decisions without escalating conflict or losing control of the outcome

  • Move toward solutions aligned with Colorado legal standards while staying centered on your family's long-term well-being

Workplace and Partnership

Workplace mediation is appropriate in a wide range of situations, including:

  • Tension or communication breakdowns between coworkers, managers, or cross-functional teams

  • Conflicts about roles, responsibilities, workload, or decision-making authority

  • Misalignment between leadership and staff regarding priorities, culture, or change initiatives

  • Concerns about respect, professionalism, or perceived inequities in the workplace

Mediation is voluntary and confidential, giving employees and leaders a structured way to be heard and work toward practical agreements that support daily collaboration.

Areas We Help You Work Through

Family in a meeting

Property Division

We guide structured, step-by-step conversations about how to divide marital and separate property, including real estate, savings, retirement accounts, debts, and personal items. Our mediators help you organize information, clarify priorities, and explore multiple scenarios to reach a division that is practical and equitable for both parties. While we do not provide legal advice, we encourage you to consult your own attorneys and financial advisors as you finalize any agreements.

Post-Decree Mediation

As children grow and circumstances change, existing court orders sometimes need to be updated. Mediation provides a neutral space to revisit parenting time, decision-making, communication patterns, and other terms so you can adjust your agreements without escalating conflict or returning to litigation.

Partnership Mediation for Co-Founders and Business Partners

Partnership mediation focuses on conflict and misalignment between business partners, co-owners, and co-founders who must continue working together or make thoughtful decisions about how to move forward. Common topics include differing visions for the business, disagreements about finances, compensation, or profit-sharing, role clarity and decision-making structures, and communication breakdowns that impact strategy and morale. Our role is to create a space where partners can address difficult issues directly and develop written understandings that reflect shared values and long-term goals.

What to Expect from the Mediation Process

Whether you're working through a divorce or a workplace conflict, the process typically includes:

  • Pre-mediation meetings with each participant (and, when appropriate, HR or leadership) to understand goals and concerns

  • Joint sessions focused on clarifying issues, identifying shared interests, and exploring options

  • Coaching around communication, feedback, and problem-solving skills you can continue using afterward

  • Support in drafting agreements or next steps that can be shared with appropriate stakeholders or advisors

The process is flexible and can be tailored to your family, organization, or partnership, whatever its size or structure.

A Neutral, Non-Clinical, Non-Legal Service

Mediation at Stevenson Heywood is a neutral, non-clinical, and non-legal service. We do not provide therapy, legal representation, or employment law advice, and we do not make decisions for the parties involved. Instead, we facilitate structured, respectful conversations and help you design your own solutions, and we encourage you to consult your own legal, financial, HR, or other professional advisors as you implement any agreements reached in mediation.

Benefits and Ongoing Support

Families, organizations, and partnerships that use mediation often experience:

  • Reduced conflict and more effective communication

  • Greater clarity around roles, expectations, and decision-making

  • Improved collaboration and trust among the people involved

  • More timely, cost-effective resolution compared to litigation or formal investigations

  • A stronger foundation for navigating future challenges with confidence

We also offer ongoing support so you can keep using what you learn in mediation in real life, including follow-up sessions, check-ins after major transitions, and written tools that support more collaborative problem-solving going forward.
